Thinking for a Living is a publisher and curator of thought-provoking design content and a creator of meaningful experiences. We are about spirited creations and seeding great ideas. Good ideas benefit someone. Great ideas benefit everyone.

Thinking for a Living is also a network built on friendship, passion, and a dedication to the craft of design. The network is an alliance of like-minded individuals who are experimenting with publishing and spreading ideas through a series of topic specific sites, conferences, workshops and publications.

Thinking for a Living 3.0 was created in collaboration with Frank Chimero and Ian Coyle.

The Museum of Modern Art’s holiday card program began in 1954 with the introduction of holiday cards created by contemporary artists and designers whose work was represented in the Museum’s exhibitions or permanent collection. Over the years, many well-known artists have contributed to the program including Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Ben Shahn and Joseph Cornell. In 2009, I was excited to be able to join these ranks with the introduction of designs of my own creation.

When approached by an independent beverage company to rebrand their line of 100% natural, carbonated juices, I responded with a simple question. “Why not call it 100%?” It only makes sense. Graphically, I felt that nothing said pure better than clean graphics and a direct statement so we decided to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid). This direction also helps to differentiate these beverages from all of the other ‘natural’ soda options. And so another brand is born. Watch for it in your local grocery stores.

The Practice Sessions by Thinking for a Living is a panel discussion and workshop with Shane Bzdok, Antonio Carusone, Frank Chimero, Duane King and Matt Owens at the National Student Show & Conference.

We developed three distinct sites to address the various needs of the panel discussion, the workshop and the students involved. The first is a promotional site for The Practice Sessions offering details about the speakers and the event. The second site is a blog to be used by the students to document their experience throughout the workshop. The third site features filtered twitter posts of optimism and is meant to positively influence the participants as well as the general public.

We were approached by Luigi Bormioli to refine their brand position and web presence based on our experience within the tabletop industry. Luigi Bormioli is renown worldwide as a leader in the glassmaking industry and was seeking a refined web site that promotes their product offerings and brand to a United States audience. We knew we had to separate Luigi Bormioli from its competition by highlighting the quality of their products, materials and design, as well as illustrating the way products work together within a collection. In addition, for reasons including SEO and compatibility, we needed HTML - but we also wanted to maintain some level of interactivity. To achieve this, we partnered with Ian Coyle who brought a high level of interactivity to the project using jQuery and JavaScript. The result is a clean, simple site that makes product browsing intuitive, memorable and most importantly, fun. The site won a Bronze Cube in the Interactive category at the Art Directors Club 88th Annual Awards.

I met Bloomingdale’s when they were looking for a way to promote their new San Francisco store online. They wanted something that they felt represented the energy and pulse of the meeting of two cities as vibrant as New York and San Francisco while highlighting some of their top designers - from Biba to Louis Vuitton. This teaser site was created with the collective talent of Athletics on a short deadline and works in conjunction with a print campaign of magazines, newspapers and billboards.

This business card was designed for Jenna Gersbach to create an instant impression of knowledge of the photographic medium by imitating the look and feel of Polaroid® film. Obviously it works: it only took one card for Jenna to land a permanent job! This design won a Gold Medal in the stationery category at the 2003 DSVC Dallas Show.

Nama Rococo is Karen Combs, artist extraordinaire, who creates beautifully lyrical wallpaper designs than span Old World styles and new. This piece highlights Karen’s design sensibilities: elegant, bold, and a bit whack. We tracked down the trademark salmon pink newsprint used by the London Financial Times and The New York Observer in order to create a piece that reflects her stylistic flair and her love for all things antique. The broadsheet format engulfs the reader in the fanciful graphic world of Nama Rococo. Nama Rococo was featured in “The Design Dozen,” a Newsweek article naming 12 designers to watch for 2006.
